November is the month of national awareness of diabetes. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death (fifth leading cause of death by disease) in America. According to the American Diabetes Association Diabetes affects over 20 million Americans, That € ™ s 7% of the population! Another 41 million Americans suffer from diabetes mellitus. This means that for every 5 people that at least one of them has either diabetes or prediabetes. This includes the likelihood of someone you know. Each day approximately 2,200 people diagnosed with diabetes, and the statistics getting worse every year.
Local fitness consultant, Katrina McKenna MetamorFitness, believes that we can reverse this trend through education and awareness. Katrina offers 7 things you can do to reverse the trend and eliminate the need for Diabetes Awareness Month.
1. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes or are at risk for diabetes need to know as much as possible from your doctor as soon as possible.
2. If you are diabetic, you learn to manage blood sugar levels. This is of vital importance in reducing the risk of serious complications such as heart disease, blindness, kidney failure and amputation of limbs.
3. If you do not have diabetes, check if you are at risk. Learn how you can reduce your risk factors to prevent or delay the diagnosis.

5. Maintain or achieve a healthy weight. If you have diabetes, weight loss will improve control of blood sugar, and if you are at risk, reduces the risk of becoming diabetic.
